|

Well,
I made it home and was sad to see all the damage from the flooding.
Most of my little catchment ponds blew out from the tremendous amount of water! It will take a lot of work to get them back in working order. With almost 1.5 inches of precip from the several consecutive days of rain, I can see that I also need to beef up my swales and controlled overflows!
Our 3 acre lot is on the confluence of several catchment basins and so we have a lot of water running over our property. It truly is a double edged sword If you can catch it, it's great for growing food. But if you are not careful, it can really screw things up!
Well, rain's coming soon so I gotta get out and start digging!

Zachrey,
Can you construct the catchment basins differently to improve their strength? What sort of soil do you have for them? I wonder if thick clay walls might work. |

Hi PeakEngineer!
I'm thinking a nice sheet of EPDM rubber for the controlled overflows will do the trick. If need be, we probably make a ferrocement overflow chute to prevent blow outs since the UV is so intense at this altitude. Only metal and cement and dirt can stand the test of time out here!
The soil out here is a mix of clay, silt and sand and gravel. It is awesome for pounding into tires to make homes, retaining walls, etc., if it has sufficient moisture. Otherwise it is like powder and flies all over the place when you pound it with a sledge hammer.
I suppose one could lay a thick layer of clay over the earthen dams to protect it from blowouts... I'm not yet aware of nearby deposits of clay that can be had for the taking.
