With the amazing monsoon season we've been having, now is the time to dump as much water as you can into the greywater system. When your GW planter is full, you generally don't need to top water anymore as the soil will be moist all the way up to the soil surface. It will also help flush out accumulated salts in the planter soil.
If you have a septic tank and contained blackwater planter, you will want to fill up the GW planter till it overflows into the septic system and eventually into the contained blackwater planter.
Once your contained blackwater planter has reached the overflow to the conventional drainfield, you can pump the blackwater onto the surface of the BW planter to flood irrigate the plants. This assumes, of course, that you have a berm all around the contained BW planter to keep the water in its proper place.
You will want to have a good supply of BW in the contained BW planter for the spring planting and now is a good time to top it off.
We usually run the bathtub for half an hour each day to fill up the BW and GW planters. Our freshwater pump does not have a heat sink on it so it is not rated for continuous duty since it gets too hot. But if you have a heat sink on your pump, run the tub or faucets for an hour or so each day.
One might object to the "waste" of good water, but if you cistern is overflowing and more rain is almost certain to come, "wasting" water is a good thing. It is making maximum use of available clean water from your roof. If your cisterns overflow all the time, all it will do is add to erosion, unless you have setup your overflows to irrigate crops or something. _________________ Zachrey Helmberger
